How to convert Outlook Pst file to Apple Mail instantly, without much effort or data corruption?
Every week I hold a twitter Q-A session where readers can ask me anything about emails, email clients, and everything related to the email communication system. I blog about a very niche topic, which isn't too crowded. You don't generally see as many readers as there would be for a blog about cats.
Perhaps, this is the reason I mostly communicate through my readers via email or twitter and respond to them personally. However, since last few weeks, I have noticed a trend where the questions related to email migration are more than usual. I am not sure if it was always like that, but I noticed it recently. That's why I have taken a up a time to day to not respond to those queries personally and instead make a blog post, so all of them can be benefited at the same time. I have also decided to write a whole series about different email migration, such as Outlook to Apple Mail and vice-versa, Thunderbird to Entourage, Mac Outlook to Apple Mail, etc. This article is the first in its series, and for today I have taken the topic of converting Outlook Pst file to Apple Mail. This is because I noticed many people asking about it in twitters Q-A session in different forms. I also found queries in my email inbox related to the same topic. For instance, one of the email was -
“I am getting tired of Windows, and also my office now has Mac computers. So I thought it would be a good time to switch to Mac at home as well. There is a problem though. I am not sure what to do with the offline data in Windows Outlook. There are stored in Pst files, and I don't know any way to convert Outlook Pst file to Apple Mail. At least, not any correct way to do that.” Another email stated the same concern but in a different way. The guy said in his email that he would like to backup all of his Outlook Pst files into Apple Mail. His windows PC was getting old and he was scared of losing the data in case of any damage to the computer. The MacBook he used most of the time was new and it sure did seem like a good idea to backup the Pst files to Apple Mail. Just like the other person, he also had no idea how to do that. So, if you too are looking for something similar, but not sure how to do it, you have come to the right place. Basically, there are many manual methods suggested by some very good experts on email and email migration. I have tried them myself and they work decently. However, they can be slow, risky, and tedious in case your database is big. For big database in Outlook Pst, these manual methods take up a lot of time in migration, and the data may corrupt during the transition phase. Not to mention, these methods are also incredibly tough for basic non-expert users. They would confuse you. Thus, the solution that I always recommend is using a third party professional software that can do it effectively and make it easy for basic users. The best one is “Pst Extractor Pro”, and currently there are no other tools that can offer the same level of quality, user-friendlinesses, and accuracy in conversion as this one does. I have used it now many times, and have also recommended it to others. Quiet surprisingly, there are almost zero complaints or negative reviews yet. So what you have to do to use it is simple. Click on “Load” and choose the Pst file (or files) that you want convert to Apple Mail. The tool will scan the files in a blink of an eye and show all the folders inside. You are also free to remove the folders from the conversion. This particular freedom helps a lot in big database, where there are many email folders that don't contain any important data for conversion. You may also want to remove any empty folders from the process. Next, all you do is select the format “Apple Mail” as output and click “Convert”. This will start the conversion will provide you with accurate Mbox files. The best thing about this tool is that you won't find any kind of missing or modified information inside Mbox file. Whatever there was originally in Pst would remain intact, untouched, and unharmed inside Mbox as well. All of your folders hierarchy (structure), email attachments, the images that are inside the email bodies, nested messages, properties (to, cc, bcc, subject, from, etc.), and other information associated with your content – will be safely and smoothly converted into Mbox for Apple Mail. You can download the free trial edition Click Here. Next week I will blog about another such task that relates to moving emails from one client to other.

Mac Mail and Windows Outlook don't go along fine; and there's no reason they should. But it creates a situation for the users that wants to come from Mac Mail to Outlook. And even though you would it hard to count the total number of posts or articles that suggest the solution for the migration, you would also find it hard to count how many times these solutions don't work. Or worse, how many times they end up hurting the user because of the time they waste, how they corrupt the original files, and such.
I got an email yesterday asking for this same thing, and my mind reverted back to the past. I noticed I've been receiving such emails a lot of times and I always replied personally to these emails. Here I will take the time out to turn my reply into a public post. Here's the excerpt from the email that refers to the question of backing up Mac Mail to Pst –
“...I ordered a new Windows laptop (HP) few days back and I am going to get it within a week. However, I have a Mac with right now with 'Mail' installed in it. I am going to give it away to my sister who will be going for her internship to another city in a day or two. I am thinking of all my offline emails in 'Mail' that aren't stored on servers. How can I keep a copy of them in my external hard drive so I can transfer them to Outlook once I got my Windows computer? I know Outlook uses Pst but I can't export the data to Pst files from the 'Mail'. Is there any way to backup Mac Mail to Pst?....”
Answer – The best way I've found to backup Mac Mail to Pst is to use “Mail Extractor Pro”. It is a very simple, light, easy to use, and highly efficient tool for converting everything in your Apple Mail to Pst format. The best thing about is that you will not lose any content or part of it when converting. Because if you go with any other methods that I have tried in past, you may end up with incomplete migration with data integrity issues. “Mail Extractor Pro” doesn't let it happen. All of your attachments, images, folder structure, email properties, and every tiniest details with the data can be converted and kept as a backup on Pst files. Furthermore, it is a very simple looking tool that is extremely light but works very fast. Its GUI is user-friendly and you don't need to know anything about how it works. As soon as you will look into it, you will know everything that's need to be done. You don't even need to export your Apple Mail data into Mbox, as with most of the other tools. “Mail Extractor Pro” can directly load up your “Mail” folder that contains everything and convert it to Pst straightway. You can download the free trial version here that's limited with its number of items (ten) it converts to Pst from each folder inside Mac Mail. But the features and everything else is not restricted or locked. So you can properly evaluate it before paying for its full unrestricted license. |
